Automated VPS Backup
As opposed to manual backup, automated VPS backup allows you to define the list of VPSes to be backed up on a periodic basis without human intervention. Automated backup is realized through the attribute mechanism. You create an attribute and assign it to the VPSes to be backed up and to the hardware node intended to store VPSs backups.
Note: You do not need to specially create attributes that will be used for backups. You can employ the same attributes that you use for provisioning purposes, for example, those that link resource types with VPSes.
To create a new periodic backup job, do the following:
- Go to Services > Cloud Infrastructure. Click Setup in the Virtuozzo list, and switch to the VPS Backup Schedules tab. The list of backup jobs is displayed. The list contains the information on the used attributes, backup periods, destination servers, used and available disk space per each backup job and the current state. If you do this for the first time, the list will be empty.
- Click Add New Backup Job. Enter the Name and Description for the new backup job.
- After you have filled in the fields, click Next to proceed.
- Click the attribute that is assigned to the VPSes you wish to make backups of.
-
Click the node you wish to use as a backup storage. At the next screen set up the periodic properties for the base and incremental backups.
- Base backup is an exact copy of the VPS.
- Incremental backup contains only changes that were made since the last base backup. Making incremental backups on the top of the base one saves disk space and time while functionally performing the same role as ordinary full backups. The only difference is that an incremental backup cannot be restored without the base one.
Define the period of backing up the VPSes: monthly, weekly or daily and set the start time of the backup job.
Note: Base VPS backups must not be performed more often that incremental backups.
Click Next to proceed.
-
At the next screen, set the number of base backups stored on the hardware node simultaneously for each VPS which has the same attribute. Click Next.
Note: While defining the retention policy, keep in mind the size of your hard drives, as VPSes can use up all the available place, stopping the back up process.
- Finally, check the settings you have configured and click Finish to save them.
The backup is scheduled to be created. You can view and edit its setting by clicking on the attribute name at the VPS Backup Schedules screen. At the VPSes tab you can see the list of VPSes involved in the backup procedures.
Take into consideration that the changes you make in the schedule of periodic backup operations take effect immediately and the previous settings are lost.
