Adding a Unit of Measure

Unit of measure is a unit, in which resource allocation and use is expressed – "Mb" for disk space, and the like. Some resources can be measured in more than one unit. For example, disk space can be measured in "Mb" and in "Gb". In this case, one of the units – the smallest one – is called base unit while others are derived from it. Derived units are called secondary units.

To add a base unit of measure:

  1. Go to System > Settings and click Units of Measure in the Products group.
  2. Click Add New Base Unit. The adding new base unit of measure dialog window is displayed.
  3. Type a name of the new unit into the Name field. This would be a commonly accepted abbreviation, such as "Mb".
  4. Type a free-form description of the unit into the Description field.
  5. Click Save to finish adding new base unit of measure.

To add a secondary unit of measure:

  1. Go to System > Settings and click Units of Measure in the Products group.
  2. Click Add New Secondary Unit. The adding new secondary unit of measure dialog window is displayed.
  3. Type a name of the new secondary unit into the Name field. This would be a commonly accepted abbreviation, such as "Gb".
  4. Type a free-form description into the Description field.
  5. Click next to the Base Unit field. From the window that opens, select a base unit to derive the secondary unit from. E.g. "Gb" is 1024 "Mb". "Mb" is a base unit, and "Gb" is a secondary one.
  6. Type a multiplier (integer) into the Number field. This is the number of base units in one secondary unit. In our example, the multiplier would be "1024".
  7. Click Save to finish adding new secondary unit of measure.

You can change a unit of measure in a resource by clicking the corresponding button – Change Unit of Measure. After the unit of measure of the resource is changed the resource amount and prices in service plans to which the resource was added are automatically recalculated according to a multiplier of the new unit of measure.

For example:

  1. There is a Diskspace resource that uses a unit of measure – MB.
  2. The Diskspace resource is added to some service plan, with included amount of 500 MB. A recurring fee is set to $0.01 per MB.
  3. The unit of measure of the Diskspace resource is changed to GB (a multiplier is 1024).
  4. After this change, the included amount of the resource in the service plan becomes 0.49 GB; the recurring fee becomes $10.24 per GB.

In a similar way, the following amounts are also recalculated:

  • Minimum and maximum amount of the resource in service templates/plans and the resource itself.
  • Amount of the resource included in a composite resource.
  • The resource limit in subscriptions. However, the subscription prices for resource are not updated.

Important: After change of the unit of measure be sure you synchronized the corresponding subscription(s) with the plan, otherwise all subscriptions will be still charged with the old UoM.
