Configuring Mailbox Provisioning

After you configure user synchronization, you must configure mailbox provisioning.

By default, mailbox provisioning is disabled. To enable and configure it, perform these steps:

  1. Open this screen:

  2. In the MAILBOX PROVISIONING area, click ENABLE.
  3. Specify how to create mailboxes for newly synchronized users:

    • In the Primary Email Address Pattern field, specify the pattern that will be used for primary email address generation.

    • In the Secondary Email Address Pattern (Optional) field, specify the pattern that will be used for secondary email address generation.

You can use the following placeholders in these patterns:

    • ${LoginName} - This will be substituted with a user log-in name without its domain part.
    • ${Alias} - This will be substituted with a user alias.
    • ${FirstName} - This will be substituted with a user's first name.
    • ${LastName} - This will be substituted with a user's last name.
    • ${Initials} - This will be substituted with user initials.
    • ${FirstName:1} - This will be substituted with the first symbol of a user's first name.
    • ${LastName:1} - This will be substituted with the first symbol of a user's last name.
    • ${Unique} - This will be substituted with a unique index if a generated email address already exists.

    Examples:

    • Primary Email Address Pattern is ${FirstName}.${LastName}@example.com. In this case, a user named Alex Scott is provided with a mailbox where the primary email address is Alex.Scott@example.com.
    • Primary Email Address Pattern is ${FirstName:1}.${LastName}@example.com. In this case, a user named Alex Scott is provided with a mailbox where the primary email address is A.Scott@example.com.
    • Primary Email Address Pattern is ${FirstName:1}.${Initials}.${LastName}${Unique}@example.com. In this case, a user named Alex H. J. Scott is provided with a mailbox where the primary email address is A.H.J.Scott@example.com, and a second user named Alex H. J. Scott is provided with a mailbox where the primary email address is A.H.J.Scott1@example.com.

    Notes:

    1. The EDS service removes spaces and replaces consecutive dots with a single dot.

    2. If you have several domains linked with the Exchange service, you can select one of them to generate email addresses for mailboxes.

  4. Depending on your Hosted Exchange subscription, specify these mailbox settings:

    • Default Mailbox Type: This defines which mailbox type is used to create mailboxes for newly synchronized users.
    • Default Mailbox Limits & Services: This defines the mailbox size and which mailbox services are enabled, such as Outlook Web Access, Outlook, ActiveSync, POP3, and IMAP4, for mailboxes of newly synchronized users.
  5. Click ENABLE.
