Configuring a Default Discount Rule

To ensure that all usage records across services have a margin applied when no specific discount rule matches, it is recommended to configure a default discount rule. If no default rule is defined, both customers and resellers will be charged the AWS rate after SPP discounts are removed.

Steps to Create a Default Discount Rule

  1. Access the AWS Discount and Credit Manager

  2. Create the Discount

    • Click Add Discount.

    • Enter a name that clearly identifies the rule as a default discount.

    • Specify the default discount percentage.

    • Choose whether the discount applies to resellers or customers.

    • (Optional) Set the Applicable Period if the discount should be time-bound.

    • Click Next.

  3. Define the Standalone Accounts context (SPP Standalone only).

It allows you to select AWS Child Accounts (also known as member or linked accounts) as a condition.

    • Select All, since we are configuring a default discount rule.

Note: When child accounts are selected, organization-level (payer) accounts cannot be selected.

  4. Define the customer context

    • Select All to apply the discount regardless of the customer involved in the transaction.

Note: For AWS SPP Standalone, this option is unavailable if a specific child account was selected in the previous step.

  5. Define the reseller context

    • Select All to apply the discount regardless of the reseller involved in the transaction.

Note: For AWS SPP Standalone, this option is also unavailable if a specific child account was selected.

  6. Define the service context

    • Select Standard Services / All to apply the discount default discount rule regardless of the service involved in the transaction.

    Notes on Service Selection

    • AWS Standalone:

      • You can either select a standard service or enable automated service discovery based on AWS refund lines.

      • When using EDP, PPA, or SPP are selected, services will be dynamically selected based on the refund lines that match with the description patterns configured in the Config tab.

    • AWS Consolidated:

      • You can either select a standard service or use the auto-discovery of services based on the AWS refunds given for the Solution Provider Program (SPP). If auto-discovery is selected, the service will be dynamically selected based on the refund lines that match the description patterns configured in the Config tab.

This dynamic approach simplifies service maintenance in discount rules. For more details, refer to the Automated Service Selection section.

  7. Add Notes (Optional)

    • Enter any relevant information in the Discount Note field.

  8. Submit the rule

    • Click Submit to save the rule.

    • A summary of the default discount rule will be displayed.
